Our Vision

Honouring the Past, Shaping the Future

Founded in 2020, Remember The Heroes is a United Kingdom-based non-profit organisation created to honour the heroes of World War II and to educate future generations about the timeless values that shaped three remarkable generations: the Generation of Columbuses in Poland, The Greatest Generation in the United States, and Britain’s Greatest Generation. Although each of these generations faced different historical and cultural experiences, they were united by shared values of courage, sacrifice, and resilience, which guided their actions during and after the war. Guided by the words of George Santayana:

“Those who do not remember the past are condemned to repeat it,”

our vision is to build a future where the memory of these heroes is kept alive, and their values continue to inspire. We believe that understanding history and preserving its material evidence—graves of fallen heroes, photos, and wartime artefacts—is essential to avoid repeating the mistakes of the past.Through active engagement, we aim to foster a world where younger generations are deeply involved in safeguarding historical relics, participating in commemorative events, and even contributing to modern causes like blood donation drives. Each fragment of history is not just a reminder of the sacrifices made but also a lesson for the future. Together, we create a world where history is a living part of our identity, reminding us of the cost of freedom and our shared duty to protect it for future generations.

Explaining the Generation of Columbuses for
English-speaking Audiences.

It’s important to note that the Generation of Columbuses is a specific Polish term that might need further clarification for English-speaking audiences. In international contexts, this generation is sometimes referred to as part of the broader Lost Generation or the World War II Generation. In English-language literature concerning Polish history and culture, the term Generation of Columbuses is often used with an explanation, for example:

“The Generation of Columbuses, a term used to describe young Polish writers and artists who came of age during World War II.”

Alternatively, the phrase Polish Columbuses is sometimes used to emphasise the specifically Polish cultural phenomenon. In more formal or academic contexts, the term may be left in its original form, with an explanation, such as:

The ‘pokolenie Kolumbów’ (Generation of Columbuses)”

The choice of translation or explanation depends on the context and the target audience of the text.

Shared Values of the: Generation of Columbuses, The Greatest Generation, and Britain’s Greatest Generation.

The Generation of Columbuses in Poland, The Greatest Generation in the United States, and Britain’s Greatest Generation are those who lived through the most challenging times – war, economic crises, and the rebuilding of their countries. They led the fight for freedom and contributed to the defeat of totalitarian regimes. Their values – such as courage, sacrifice, brotherhood, and respect for freedom and the rule of law – were crucial in this fight and remain essential today in building a better and more just world. Despite their different historical contexts, these three generations shared common values that enabled them to persevere through the hardships of war and post-war reconstruction.

Optimism

Belief in a better future and the possibility of fulfilling dreams. Despite the adversities, these generations were characterised by hope and the conviction that a better future was possible if they fought for their dreams.

Personal Responsibility

A strong sense of responsibility for one’s actions and decisions. Every member of these generations understood that their actions had a direct impact on others and the fate of their country.

Humility

Modesty and a lack of desire for praise. Despite their great achievements, the members of these generations often emphasised that what they did was a duty, not a reason for pride.

Work Ethic

Hard work was the norm and a source of pride. Both during the war and in the post-war period, these generations worked with incredible determination to rebuild their countries.

Frugality

Careful management of resources, learned from the experience of the Great Depression and the hardships of war. The Generation of Columbuses, The Greatest Generation, and Britain’s Greatest Generation shared a deep-rooted approach to thrift and resourcefulness.

Loyalty and Commitment

Unwavering loyalty to employers, life partners, and the nation. These generations were characterised by steadfast dedication to their countries, employers, and families, which was essential for survival in tough times.

Patriotism

A strong sense of loyalty to one’s country. Despite geographic differences, all these generations were united by a deep patriotism, which motivated them to fight for freedom and rebuild their nations.

Honesty and Integrity

Valuing honesty and being trustworthy. Both in private and public life, these generations placed honesty and integrity at the forefront, which became the cornerstone of their ethical conduct.

Sacrifice

Willingness to make sacrifices for the good of the country and others. All members of these generations were prepared to make the ultimate sacrifices, both on the battlefield and in daily life, to secure a better future for their children and countries.

Family

Family was the central point of life for these generations, especially after the war when rebuilding stable family relationships became a primary goal.

Shared Characteristics and Values.

Despite their different historical contexts, the Generation of Columbuses, The Greatest Generation, and Britain’s Greatest Generation shared common traits that enabled them to survive the hardest times. They were resilient, full of fortitude, and exhibited unyielding patriotism. The early maturity forced upon them by the war taught them responsibility and the value of hard work.

These generations made an irreplaceable contribution to the reconstruction of their countries after the war, shaping modern societies based on values like honesty, loyalty, and sacrifice.

In the United Kingdom, although the term The Greatest Generation is not as widely used as in the United States, the concept of a generation that survived World War II and rebuilt the country is deeply rooted and respected. Britain’s Greatest Generation, like the Generation of Columbuses in Poland and The Greatest Generation in the United States, displayed the same resilience, fortitude, and dedication in the face of the greatest hardships.

These shared values and experiences provided the foundation that allowed the free nations of the world to effectively fight regimes based on tyranny, coercion, and terror. Thanks to them, it was possible to create a broad movement of resistance to totalitarian ideologies and to unite societies in defence of freedom, human dignity, and the rule of law.

01

To Remember the Heroes

Remembering the heroes is the cornerstone of our mission. The Generation of Columbuses, The Greatest Generation, and Britain’s Greatest Generation were people who sacrificed their lives, health, and youth in the fight for freedom. We honour those who fought against regimes of tyranny and coercion so that their deeds are never forgotten and can inspire future generations. Their sacrifice, courage, and brotherhood are examples that should endure for centuries as a source of inspiration for all of us.
As part of our mission, we take great care in maintaining the burial sites of these heroes, ensuring that everyone can pay them the respect they deserve, and that these places serve as symbolic reminders of history. Each of these sites is a living testament to their sacrifice, reminding us of how precious freedom truly is. Caring for these places is not only an act of respect for the deceased but also a responsibility we hold for future generations, ensuring that the memory of these heroes is passed on.

02

To Acquaint with History

Education about history is crucial for understanding the modern world and avoiding the mistakes of the past. We believe that learning about World War II, the lives of its heroes, and the dramatic events that unfolded during that time is essential for building a better and fairer world. Understanding history not only helps us comprehend the past but also teaches us how to prevent the same errors from recurring in the future.
Through this pillar, we encourage the preservation and sharing of mementos that can survive thanks to the involvement of new generations, saving them from being forgotten. Photos, documents, personal items – all these serve as invaluable sources of knowledge about the past and help preserve the material remnants of history that younger generations can rediscover. Preserving these mementos is our shared responsibility because they are precious fragments of our identity and national heritage.

03

To Follow the Spirit

The spirit of sacrifice, courage, and brotherhood that accompanied the heroes of World War II should serve as a model for all of us. To follow the spirit means not only remembering their actions but also actively putting their ideals into practice – both in daily life and in difficult moments that demand courage, a moral compass, and a commitment to the greater good.
We want these values to be the foundation on which new generations build their lives and decisions, drawing inspiration from the heroes of the past. The spirit of The Greatest Generation, the Generation of Columbuses, and Britain’s Greatest Generation, their resilience, and their adherence to principles should serve as lessons for all of us in the future. These generations not only fought for freedom but also built lasting communities based on values such as honesty, brotherhood, and respect for others.
